The Rex Cancer Center Story

"As the treatment of cancer advances, so will Rex Hospital."

Those were the words of Rex Hospital Board Chairman Richard Urquhart Jr., on September 13, 1987, during the dedication ceremony of our newly opened cancer center. At that time, the concept of a freestanding building specifically dedicated to the treatment of cancer was innovative. Rex Cancer Center was only one of six in the Southeast and fewer than 100 in the country.

Today Rex continues it’s tradition of leadership and compassion in the way it provides care for area cancer patients. Although proud of our pioneering effort, our staff knows cancer treatment was about much more than state-of-the-art cinderblock and square footage. It is about the patient. As a result, we provide programs meant not only to take care of patients' physical needs, but their emotional and spiritual ones as well. These efforts have been recognized and applauded locally and regionally. In 1991, the center received national accreditation as a comprehensive community cancer center providing care and services in prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

At the foundation of Rex Cancer Center are outstanding radiation oncology and hematology/oncology services as well as a broad range of comprehensive support services. Rex Cancer Center offers the most-up-to-date cancer care including cutting edge treatments and clinical trials. In addition to offering a full range of oncology and hematology services in prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, we also provide patients and their families with educational programs, screening programs, integrative/wellness workshops, support groups and individual counseling.

The Rex Cancer Center story is still being written…written by our patients, our staff, our physicians and our community. Each day our story is enriched with individual chapters of hope, survival and strength. Our story will continue as we grow to meet the needs of our patients and respond to the technological and medical advances that will eventually conquer this disease. We look forward to the day when our final chapter is written, a cure is found and we gladly close our doors.
